Genetics Genetically modified crops (also known as genetically engineered, GMO or GE crops) have been in commercial production since the mid-1990s. GMO crops are created through a variety of laboratory techniques that insert genes, usually from different species, into the genome of existing crop varieties. GMO crop varieties are typically patented by their developers and the seed is licensed to farmers. There are six field crops with genetically modified varieties in widespread use in the US: corn, soybeans, canola, cotton, sugar beets and, to a lesser extent, alfalfa. The most widely grown GMO varieties of these field crops have been engineered to enable the plant to survive spraying with certain herbicides (i.e. herbicide-tolerant traits); and/or to produce proteins in their tissues that are toxic to certain insect pests (i.e. insecticidal traits). Genetically modified varieties of other fruits and vegetables have been developed and commercialized on a smaller scale, including papaya, squash, potato, and apple. A genetically engineered salmon has been developed but is still under review by regulatory agencies.

The Non-GMO Project contracts with founding member Global FoodChain Advisors to provide verification and testing services, the costs for which are born by companies submitting products for non-GMO certification. The for-profit FoodChain, not the Non-GMO Project, invoices companies directly and a separate fee is paid to the Non-GMO Project for the licensing agreement to use the non-GMO logo on product labels and other marketing materials. FoodChain does not require testing of submitted products if company submitted paperwork meets standard guidelines. If testing or facility inspection is required, then FoodChain sister-organization Genetic-ID conducts such testing. No disclosures of this business relationship to the Non-GMO Projects' founding board members and ongoing business relationship to FoodChain are found on their IRS 990 tax forms.
