The Dutch food safety organization Voedingscentrum presented health claims that marketers use in selling many so-called superfoods, such as goji berry, hempseed, chia seeds, and wheatgrass, noting that such claims are not scientifically proven. The organisation warned that people who go to extremes in their conviction and consume large quantities of specific superfoods may have an "impaired, one-sided diet".
The problem is that most research on superfoods tests chemicals and extracts in concentrations not found in the food in its natural state. The key to getting these benefits is much less about the specific foods, and much more about eating a sufficient total amount of protein and fiber per day and ideally consuming a meaningful amount of each at each meal.
