As public concern about the labeling of genetically modified (also known as genetically engineered/GE or genetically modified organisms/GMO) food products continues to grow, the market for non-GMO products is surging. As a result, high-profile companies like Campbell Soup Company, General Mills, Del Monte and PepsiCo have all recently announced non-GMO labeling initiatives. According to Packaged Facts–a leading publisher of market research in the food and beverage sector–forecasts a near doubling of the global market for non-GMO foods and beverages by 2019. With independent annual audits to ensure compliance, Certified Non-GMO by AGW provides farmers, ranchers and food producers with a robust, trusted and highly competitive Non-GMO label claim.

Rats fed Monsanto’s GM corn NK603 and tiny amounts of Roundup herbicide over a two-year period—the longest ever feeding study involving a GM food—developed severe liver and kidney damage, disturbance to pituitary gland function, and hormonal disruption. Additional findings included increased rates of large tumors and premature deaths. The study was first published in the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology but was later retracted due to pressure by pro-GMO scientists and groups. It was later republished in Environmental Sciences Europe.

As mentioned above, one of the primary benefits of eating organic is lower levels of pesticides. However, despite popular belief, organic farms do use pesticides. The difference is that they only use naturally-derived pesticides, rather than the synthetic pesticides used on conventional commercial farms. Natural pesticides are believed to be less toxic, however, some have been found to have health risks. That said, your exposure to harmful pesticides will be lower when eating organic.

Dessert Shoes & David Wolfe provides very detailed information about some specific "superfoods" and also provides scientific rationale (sometimes down to the molecular level) about why these foods are so beneficial for us. This book is very informative and I like that it also provides practical ways in which to consume the superfoods, providing recipes and recommended dosages. However, he also lists a lot of very "impractical" recipes using very obscure and expensive ingredients that most people will not find in their pantries, even if they are already a practicing raw-foodist (like me). While I find the information very enlightening, I also find a lot of blatant advertising for David's "Sunfood" brand of products and his "Longevity Now" program. I don't know about you, but when I find a sales pitch interwoven into the pages of what should be a purely informative book, it immediately causes me to have some doubts regarding the credibility of the material. So, while the information on superfoods is very good, I was not impressed with the advertising thrown in with it. Otherwise, I would have given it 5 stars.
