Sarah Klein The moringa is also a promising biofuel and medicinal source. For hundreds of years, people have been using the moringa for everything from cooking oil and cosmetics to animal feed and cleaning agent. But undoubtedly the most amazing quality of the moringa is that it can purify water. Just drop some crushed moringa seeds in a bucket of dirty, unsafe water, and within about an hour, that water will be safe to drink. Scientists say it’s because the moringa seeds produce chemicals that cause dirt and bacteria and other pollutants to settle. The moringa seed could provide a simple yet valuable tool in poor communities where diarrhea caused by water-borne bacteria is one of the biggest sources of childhood fatalities, according to a paper in Current Protocols in Microbiology.

See also Lip Makeup What I like most about this book is that it stresses healthful eating and not dieting. It's a book for everyone. Folks, listen up: there are plenty of skinny people out there who are unhealthy (I knew someone who lived on a diet consisting of diet coke, candy bars and cigarettes and had quite a trim figure but who ended up with a bunch of other health problems that weren't visible on the outside to the layman's eye). This book gets into the best foods for the human machine - for what ails you or for what you can prevent from ailing you in the future. I read it because I was feeling tired and looking pale and I wasn't keen on choking down a fistful of supplements every day. The 14 foods are actually quite good - oranges, pumpkin (I always was partial to orange food), broccoli, turkey, nuts, oats, wild Alaskan salmon etc... The recipes are really good too - not like other books that substitute artificial ingredients for calories' sake (there's no splenda here thank heavens). You use real sugar (but a lot less of it and most of the time brown sugar), real flour (regular and whole wheat), real eggs... well you get the idea. I made the oat bran muffins that were sweetened by grinding an orange in the blender combined with a little brown sugar and I couldn't believe how good they were. I also made the apple crisp which was very good (made with walnuts) and am planning to try the pumpkin pudding and the salmon burgers next.

A few weeks ago, I wrote about the methodological issues with the Environmental Working Group’s annual “Dirty Dozen” and “Clean Fifteen” lists. Does this mean there’s no reason to purchase organic foods? Absolutely not. But it’s far too easy to succumb to black-or-white or even magical thinking about what the word “organic” represents.

No wonder why she looks the way she does... David Wolfe provides very detailed information about some specific "superfoods" and also provides scientific rationale (sometimes down to the molecular level) about why these foods are so beneficial for us. This book is very informative and I like that it also provides practical ways in which to consume the superfoods, providing recipes and recommended dosages. However, he also lists a lot of very "impractical" recipes using very obscure and expensive ingredients that most people will not find in their pantries, even if they are already a practicing raw-foodist (like me). While I find the information very enlightening, I also find a lot of blatant advertising for David's "Sunfood" brand of products and his "Longevity Now" program. I don't know about you, but when I find a sales pitch interwoven into the pages of what should be a purely informative book, it immediately causes me to have some doubts regarding the credibility of the material. So, while the information on superfoods is very good, I was not impressed with the advertising thrown in with it. Otherwise, I would have given it 5 stars.
