These beliefs are promoted by the organic food industry, and have fueled increased demand for organic food despite higher prices and difficulty in confirming these claimed benefits scientifically. Organic labels also stimulate the consumer to view the product as having more positive nutritional value.

By adding these new genes, genetic engineers hope the plant will express the traits associated with the genes. Bt genes express a protein that kills insects, and transferring the genes allows the corn to produce its own pesticide.
